Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, is shown with head and shoulders to the right in a blue frock coat with an aiguillette and the star of the Garter.
The seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it was reported that Arthur became the Queen's favourite child. He showed an early interest in the military and conducted a long and distinguished career as an army officer, including service in South Africa, Canada in 1869, Ireland, Egypt in 1882, and in India from 1886 to 1890.
Queen Victoria was pleased with Von Angeli's portrait of her son, describing it as 'an excellent likeness'. The artist received £157 10s in payment for the portrait in 1877 and it was placed at Osborne House.Provenance
