The Homage at the Coronation of Queen Victoria (oil sketch) 1838
Oil on canvas board | 30.1 x 25.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404877
-
Queen Victoria is seated on her throne or 'Homage Chair' receiving Homage from a peer. The view is taken from the altar looking towards the west end of Westminster Abbey. When Sir George Hayter was preparing sketches for his painting of Queen Victoria's Coronation, the Queen asked him to paint the 'Doing Homage'. This was a stage in the ceremony after the scene eventually chosen for the final composition (RCIN 405409), which shows the same scene 'in profile'. This sketch may have been the one the artist took to Buckingham Palace on 17 July and which was set aside by the Queen in favour of the final design.
Signed: G Hayter. On the back is a label which is written in the artist's hand: 'Sketched from the scene / in Westminster Abbey June 28 / 1838 / The doing Homage To The / Queen at Her Coronation / George Hayter.'Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded in store at Windsor Castle in 1879
