Van Diest was a Dutch artist from The Hague who came to England in 1678 and created landscapes, presumably to fit into interior decorative schemes. One such landscape (probably OM 427, 406442) was recorded with an attribution to ‘Vandist’ in the Great Bedchamber at Kensington during the reign of Queen Anne. This is one of four 'indifferent landscapes over doors, by Van Diest' mentioned in 1763 by Horace Walpole in the King's Great Room at Kensington (see OM 428-431). The set should probably be dated to c. 1690.
Provenance
One of a set of four landscapes (404346, 402557, 404861 and one lost) of identical dimensions; two are recorded in Princess's Augusta's Bedroom at Kew in 1805; all four are removed from Kew to Windsor Castle in 1805; this is one of two that appear in the Duke of Cumberland's Apartments at St James's Palace in 1819 (no 1073)
