Sir Henry wrote to his wife on 21 July 1889 that the Queen had 'told Swoboda to paint my head which is a great bore'. He had a distinguished career in the military and at court. A contemporary said of him: 'The longer I live and the more I look back, the more remarkable man he seems to me. One of, if not the greatest gentleman I have known: the entire effacement of self; the absolute non-existence of conceit, side or pose; the charming courtesy … his enormous powers of work'.
