An early cartellino contains the inscription ...Witenburg / [16]08. The portrait must represent one of the sons of Frederick VI, Duke of Wurtemburg, K.G., who died in 1608. His elder son and successor John Frederick is not recorded in England in that year, but he sent over his younger brother Louis Frederick (1586-1631) with his father's Garter insignia. Louis Frederick was in England for three months in the Autumn and early winter of 1608, was hospitably entertained by James I and might have sat to Gheeraerts while he was in London. His portrait in the Society of Antiquaries bears a very close resemblance to this portrait.
The sitter is standing facing half to the left, his head turned slightly to the left. He wears a black doublet, voluminous black breeches decorated at the knee with black ribbon garters, a black cloak and holds his hat in his right hand. His standing collar and pleated cuffs are made of fine transparent linen. A red curtain is draped behind.Provenance
Probably painted for James I or Anne of Denmark; recorded in the Queen's Gallery at Greenwich in 1639 (no 32, with slightly different dimensions, 7ft x 4ft 4in) sold from here (as the Duke of Schwarzenberg) for £4 to Murray and others 23 October 1651 (no 139); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 7)
