Ernst von Mansfeld was the illegitimate son of Peter von Mansfeld, governor of Luxembourg. He was a professional soldier and mercenary leader who maintained an army in the Protestant service in the Thirty Years War, until his deafeat by Wallenstein in 1626 at the Bridge of Dessau. This picture was presumably painted during Mansfeld's visits to London in 1624.

Painted for Charles I and recorded in the Bear Gallery at Whitehall in 1639 (no 4); sold from there to De Critz and others for £20 on 18 November 1651 (no 17); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the 2nd Privy Lodging Room at Whitehall in 1666 (no 227)
