Sir Evelyn is depicted in uniform with the star of the Bath and a number of ribbons which include: the Crimea, Indian Mutiny and Egypt 1882-9 medals; the Kedive's Egypt Star; the medal for South Africa 1877-9; and the Victoria Cross. He had entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1852. He served in the Crimea, then transferred to the army and had a distinguished career in India, South Africa and Egypt, becoming Field-Marshal in 1903. Queen Victoria had a very high opinion of him.
