Bernard van Orley lived and worked mainly in Brussels. Van Orley ran a large workshop which produced numerous portraits and religious paintings, as well as designs for tapestries and stained glass. This depiction of the Virgin and Child with the Christ Child holding a rosary of red and gold beads on a green string is thought to be by an artist trained in Van Orley's workshop. It derives from an original painting by van Orley formerly in the collection of Friedrich Gluck at Budapest (present location unknown).
Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 67 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
