Venice: The Grand Canal towards the Bacino, with S. Maria della Salute c. 1725-83
Oil on canvas | 148.5 x 139.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404596
-
At the right, S. Maria della Salute rising behind the houses lining the Grand Canal, with the Punta della Dogana beyond. At the far left, the Palazzo Corner della Ca' Grande; the Riva degli Schiavoni is in the distance.
This work is a copy based on an early picture by Canaletto sold at Sotheby's, London, in 1985. The peculiarity of the omission from this painting of the subsidiary dome of the Salute also occurs in Canaletto's original.Provenance
First recorded in the Hall at Buckingham Palace in 1790 attributed to 'Bartoletti'; still there in 1819 but now as Canaletto (no 843)
