This scene depicts a typical army encampment of the period (at least according to paintings): an improvised gathering of tents manned by camp-followers providing ‘necessaries’ – food, beer and women – for the soldiers. Horse traders also presumably operated in this arena. Signed lower right: 'PHILS. W'
