The visit by the Virgin to her cousin Elizabeth, following the Annunciation, is told in Luke I. 36-50. Here the figures are shown in half-length and embracing; the Virgin wears a red dress and a blue cloak. Behind them is a red curtain and above them are three putti heads.
This is an old copy of the central portion of Maratta's Visitation in S. Maria della Pace, Rome. Among the pictures bought by Richard Dalton in Rome for 150 Roman crowns, it was hung in the King's Writing-Closet at Hampton Court.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819, hanging in the King's Writing-Closet at Hampton Court (RCIN 922133).Provenance
