Annie Macdonald was the daughter of John Macdonald, Jäger (huntsman) to Prince Albert on the Balmoral estate in Scotland. The Queen also painted a portrait of her brother Archie (RCIN 403679). The Queen was pleased with the painting and recorded in her Journal: ‘It really is quite successful. She has got a Balmoral plaid over her head’. Signed and dated: V R. Ap:1852. Inscribed on the back as painted by the Queen from life.
