This is a copy of Hermann Winterhalter’s painting (RCIN 404782) which had been painted for Queen Victoria as a present for Prince Albert at Christmas 1843. The original was one of a set of four ‘Virtues’, the others being La Naïveté (RCIN 404538), L’Innocence (RCIN 406400) and La Pudeur (RCIN 404627). Queen Victoria had described it as a ‘very pretty painting’ in her Journal. Signed and dated: VR [initials in monogram] copd / June 1852.
