This was portrait was probably painted for Queen Victoria’s son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and his wife, Alexandra, Princess of Wales. It is a copy by J. G. Middleton of a study by James Sant for the head of Prince Albert Victor (RCIN 404996) in a painting of Queen Victoria and three of her grandchildren by the same artist (RCIN 406763). Prince Albert Victor (1864-92) was the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). He died of pneumonia in 1892.
