This painting shows the view from the heights above Caenlochan Glen on the Balmoral estate in Scotland, looking down the River Isla. The place held special memories for Queen Victoria. She and Prince Albert had had a picnic there on 16 October 1861, just a few months before the Prince’s death. She described the scenery in her Journal: ‘The edge of the valley of Cairn Lochan ... is indeed “a bonnie place” ... a narrow valley, the river Isla winding through it like a silver ribbon, with trees at the bottom. The hills are green and steep, but towards the head of the valley there are fine precipices’. Signed and dated: August Becker. 1865. Inscribed on the back with the subject and the date.
