Pan and Syrinx c.1670-1700
Oil on canvas | 42.6 x 60.8 x 1.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403480
-
Described as Albano in 1819, this slight mythological scene seems to be by a follower of Pietro da Cortona.
Against a background of trees and a palm tree, Syrinx, seated on the right, looks to the left to Pan, who plays the pipes facing her; below him are two putti. This subject is usually depicted as Pan chasing Syrinx, rather than playing to her on the pipes, as here. The next episode in the story is alluded to by the goat-legged putti chasing the human one.Provenance
Acquired by George IV; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1819 (no 326) as 'Albano, landscape with a Nymph Satyr and Cupid, much damaged' and valued at 2 guineas
