Isabella of Austria (1501-1526) c.1510-15
Oil on panel | 36.2 x 24.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403466
-
Half-length portrait, turned half to the left, her hands touch to the front; wearing a black and red brocade dress embroidered with gold, a richly jewelled headdress and a jewelled collar.
Originally this panel had an engaged frame, which has been removed at some point in its history.
There was much debate in the nineteenth century regarding the sitter's identity. It was acknowleded that the sitter was one of the sisters of The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (the daughters of Philip I and Joanna of Castile), but it was not clear which one. The portrait is now accepted as Isabella of Austria (who became Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden) due to the similarity of the facial features to other portraits of her (for example the portrait by the Master of the Legend of the Magdalene in the National Museum, Krakow).Provenance
First recorded in the collection of Henry VIII at Whitehall in 1542 (no 692); in the Privy Gallery in 1639 (no 41); probably one of the '31 pictures of Kings and princes' sold for £20 to de la Mare on 28 June 1650 from St James's Palace (no 218); recovered at the Restoration and back in the King's Privy Gallery at Whitehall in 1666 (no 122)
