Charles I (1600-1649), when Prince of Wales, identified as c. 1618
Oil on panel | 68.9 x 50.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403232
-
Although recorded in 1818 as a portrait of Prince Henry, this painting is not believed to represent Henry, Prince of Wales. It may depicts his younger brother in c.1620, five years before his accession as Charles I in 1625. The identification is based on its similarity to a group of portraits depicting Charles, Prince of Wales, at this date, including another Mytens portrait (OM 123, RCIN 403370) and some miniatures by Peter Oliver (RCIN 420049, 420051 and 420055).
Provenance
First certainly recorded in the Privy Chamber at Kensington in 1818 (no 115) as a portrait of Prince Henry by Cornelius Johnson; it may be the 'head of King Charles the first in a Ruff' in the Passage Room at Kensington in 1710 (no 134)
