Princess Victoria, the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, is depicted sitting on a rug, offering a bunch of heartsease (wild pansies) to a Java pony (a breed developed on the island of Java, Indonesia, and known for its good temperament). Behind her is a mastiff and in the background an indication of the East Terrace at Windsor Castle. This may be the painting Queen Victoria gave to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1842, which she described in her Journal as ‘a magnificent life-size sketch of Pussy [Princess Victoria] who never sat for it’.
