Dandie Dinmont was a Skye terrier given by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria on her birthday, 24 May 1842. He died in 1858, aged 19. Queen Victoria thought that the painting was ‘so like the dear old fellow’. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854. Inscribed on the back with the names of artist and sitter and the date, 1852.
