In the foreground the Virgin kneels in adoration of the Christ Child, who is lying naked on a cloth. Saint Joseph is seated behind him, looking down towards the young Saint John the Baptist who is kneeling at the left. At the right is a partly ruined stable with an ox and an ass, to the left the background recedes as a mountainous landscape. The tondo is cut from a single piece of poplar. Although Queen Victoria acquired this tondo as a work by Ghirlandaio, it is not an autograph work and is now assigned to the workshop of Ghirlandaio’s pupil and brother-in-law, Sebastiano Mainardi. There is an almost identical composition (but without the Baptist) at Dresden, a second formerly in the Harrach Gallery in Vienna and a third in a private collection in New York. This suggests that the paintings were based upon the same stock of drawings or cartoons, which were products of Mainardi’s workshop. Inscribed on the Baptist’s scroll: ‘ECC. ANGIV…;’ on the back, white paint: ‘The Holy Family, Domenico del Ghirlandajo’
Provenance
Bought through Ludwig Cruner from S. Cianfanelli as Ghirlandaio for £150 (Queen Victoria's Private Accounts); given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria on their anniversary, 20th February 1848; recorded in the Governess's Bedroom at Osborne House in 1876 (no 77)
