Though traditionally attributed to van der Werff, this looks more like the work of a Flemish artist and should be dated to the last decades of the seventeenth century. In a clearing before the tree of Knowledge, Adam and Eve, both naked, stand clasping one another; the Devil crouches on the ground on the right.
Provenance
Probably the painting listed in the store at Whitehall Palace in 1688 (no 435) and in various places throughout the 18th Century. Certainly described in the Queen's Dining Room at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 190) as by Wouters.
