The Pietà c.1600-50
Oil on canvas | 98.0 x 81.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402896
-
The Virgin is shown in full-length, with two grieving putti, supporting the dead Christ. This is a reduced copy of a picture of 1599-1600 by Annibale Carracci in the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte, Naples. It was probably painted in the mid seventeenth century by a northern, conceivably Flemish, painter. From very early on Annibale's original was much copied; in this version the artist has introduced some variations in the background.
Provenance
First recorded in Queen Caroline's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 489) as from the 'School of Vandyke'
