Follower of Raphael (Urbino 1483-Rome 1520)
The Virgin and Child c.1580-1650
Oil on canvas | 71.6 x 47.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402872
-
Against a dark background the Virgin, at half-length and facing slightly to the left, holds the Christ Child cheek-to-cheek. She is wearing an embroidered shawl over her head and shoulders, and he is sitting on a large white cushion. Both look out at the viewer. The painting is a pastiche of Raphael's work; there are elements especially of the 'Sistine Madonna', which was at Piacenza. The painter was provincial, perhaps Emilian or Lombard, and was remote in time from Raphael, pehaps of the seventeenth century.
