This is the work of an early copyist or imitator of Adriaen van de Velde. In the centre, a standing cow, with a cow and a sheep lying down on the left; behind them a shepherd sleeps with his horse beside him, beneath a tent strung from two trees on a low hill.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in the King's Writing Closet at Hampton Court Palace (RCIN 922133).Provenance
Probably acquired by William III; first recorded at Hampton Court in 1710 (Closet below Stairs, no 51)
