Christ in the House of Martha and Mary c.1605-20
Oil on canvas | 119.4 x 165.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402794

Christ stands on the right, by a column; Mary kneels in front to his left, and Martha invites him to a table in the centre, at which a man is seated. At the left is a fireplace, with a woman cooking; pots, pans and plates are on the wall behind and the background opens to a landscape. This is a version in reversed direction of a composition by Jacopo Bassano, of which the best version is the one signed by Jacopo and his son Francesco now in the Blaffer Foundation, Houston, Texas. The composition is represented in a replica in the Royal Collection. This is a much simplified version of Jacopo’s design, and is a sensitive picture which may be attributable to Bassano’s Spanish pupil Pedro Orrente.
Provenance
Probably the picture acquired by Charles II from Frizell at Breda, 1662: ‘One lardge peece of Martha and Marie with Christ of Spagnolet’ (List I no 22); recorded in the King's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 148)
