Mater Dolorosa c.1600-20
Oil on panel | 76.5 x 61.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402762

The Virgin, half-length and facing three-quarters left, has her hands clasped and is weeping. She is wearing a brown robe over a red dress, with a white veil. This is a replica of a lost work signed by Titian that was in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in the mid seventeenth century. Several other copies of the painting exist; this one is particularly good quality and appears to have been made about 1600-1620 in the Netherlands. Inscribed: ‘LA SCONSOLATA’
Provenance
Bears the red wax seal of the Capel family; one of a group of paintings acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the Privy Chamber at Kensington Palace in 1818 as after Titian (no 78)
