-
Born in 1508, Marco di Niccolò di Giovanni Grimani belonged to the branch known as the Secondo Grimani. He was elected Procuratore de Citra on 16 October 1576, and in this bust-length portrait he wears the fur-trimmed, deep red robes of his office. Other versions of this portrait exist, most notably a larger and more impressive version that includes the sitter’s hands in the Prado, Madrid. It seems likely that this picture is a replica of the Prado painting and was produced in Jacopo’s workshop; the handling of the costume suggests that the assistant may have been Domenico Tintoretto. The portrait can be dated to c. 1580 – the same head appears in a portrait in the Accademia, Venice, dated 1576 and inscribed with the name and arms if Marco Grimani.
Provenance
Probably first recorded in the King's Great Closet at Whitehall (no 565); in Kensington Palace throughout the 18th Century and certainly recorded there in the Privy Chamber in 1818 (no 82)
