The Penitent Magdalene c.1561-1650
Oil on canvas | 102.2 x 89.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402718
-
The Magdalene is turned slightly right, half-length, and is looking upwards, with her hands clasped to her breast. She is wearing a white chemise and striped dress. In the background are rocks at the left and an open landscape at the right; in the foreground is a vase at the left and a book propped open on a skull at the right. This is a copy of a late work by Titian in the Hermitage, St Petersburg, with minor variations in the landscape and the set of the head. It is a soft painting of a generally brownish cast, dark in tone and approximately Titianesque in technique, but it is certainly not a product of his studio.
