-
This would appear to be an amateurish portrait of a 'character', perhaps a known servant or just a type. The costume dates it to c. 1700. The sitter wears a brown jacket with a white neck tie.
Provenance
First recorded in 1818 in Queen's Caroline's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace, where it is described as 'indifferent' (no 473).
