The Last Supper c.1570-1628
Oil on canvas | 49.8 x 93.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402641

Thirteen figures are seated around a large table, which runs parallel to the picture plane. In the centre sits Christ, his head surrounded by bright light. Christ gestures with his right hand to Judas who is alone on the nearer side of the table, with his back turned to the spectator. The background is architectural. Painted on very coarse canvas, the picture is now in a ruinous condition. It is in the style of Palma Giovane but the quality seems feeble, suggesting that it is a workshop piece.
Provenance
Probably the picture given by the Marquess of Hamilton to Charles I, 'a little peece of the young Palmo, being the Lords Supper, little intire firgues'; recorded in the Cabinet Room at Whitehall in 1639 (no 25); sold to Embry for £12 on 21 May 1650 from St James's (no 162); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the King's Privy Gallery at Whitehall in 1666 (no 139)
