Oil on canvas | 124.6 x 99.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402631
-
Half-length, the Magdalen stands in a landscape, turned slightly to the right, naked, but largely covering herself with her golden hair which she clasps to her bosom and waist.
This is a copy after the signed Magdalen of 1530-5 (Palazzo Pitti, from the collection of the Dukes of Urbino).Provenance
First recorded in Store at Whitehall in 1688 (no 231); listed as an overdoor in the Great Drawing Room at Kensington Palace in 1732, by which time it had been extended given a new frame designed by William Kent and paired with Ribera's Baptist (RCIN 402883); both paintings appear opposite each other in the Crimson Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922142).
