A characteristic example of the candlelit scene for which Schalcken and his teacher, Gerrit Dou, were famous. The Magdalen is shown in a cavern, seated before a table; she looks upwards at a crucifix while holding a skull in her left hand; on the table is a pearl and a jewel-box.
