The life-size original of this composition was painted in 1759, the likeness taken supposedly unseen by the King 'as he was speaking to one of his attendants at the top of the great Staircase at Kensington Palace'. It was engraved in 1766 by William Dickinson and hangs at Audley End. In this poor copy the King is shown standing at the head of a staircase, wearing the Garter and the ribbon of the Order of the Garter; a grenadier of the 2nd Foot Guards and a Yeoman of the Guard are seen lower on the staircase.
Provenance
First recorded in the 2nd Room of the prince of Wales's Apartments at Hampton Court in 1835 (no 498) and 1861 (no 598)
