Oil on canvas | 76.5 x 64.3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402501
-
This is a copy of a portrait of Princess Victoria painted for Princess Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent, by William Fowler in 1825 (RCIN 405050). The Princess is carrying a feathered hat and there is a fold of ermine over her arm. Later, when she was Queen, Victoria described the original picture in a letter as very badly painted and as done from the bust by William Behnes, of which there are many copies and replicas, including one in the Royal Collection. An engraving of the painting was published in 1830 and a number of versions of the portrait were made. Inscribed on the back as by the artist Corden after William Fowler and describing the sitter as nine years old.
Provenance
Presumably painted for the Duchess of Kent.
