Persimmon, a bay racehorse, stands, facing fully to the left, with jockey up in royal colours, on Newmarket racecourse; white rails in the middle distance and on the left in the far distance is a grandstand; blue sky and clouds.
This painting was presumably commissioned by the Prince of Wales; later King Edward VII following Persimmon's racing successes of 1896. A preparatory sketch in pencil and ink with white heightening, signed and dated 1896 is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 452816).
Foaled in 1893, by St Simon out of Perdita, Persimmon was the full brother to Diamond Jubilee. In 1896, he won the Derby, St. Leger and Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket for King Edward VII when Prince of Wales.Provenance
