Oil on canvas | 101.5 x 127.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402305
-
A full-length, equestrian portrait of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The Prince is mounted on a bay horse, with his body turned to the front, wearing a grey suit and top hat. The background is a racecourse, identified on the label as Newmarket, with horses and figures.
The painting probably remained in Barraud's studio at his death and was lot 109 of the studio sale of 1875. The Prince of Wales appears in a similar pose, albeit reversed, to his portrait in the enormous scene of Punchestown Races, painted by Barraud, c.1868 (engraving at Sotheby's, Racing sale, 13 Nov 1996, lot 102). Here the Prince is mounted on a gray horse.
A painting of Cotherstone, the 1843 Derby Winner, by Barraud is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 409140). He also painted two versions of a painting of the Prince and Princess of Wales riding out, c. 1865.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Elizabeth II for the Royal Collection from Arthur Ackerman & Son Ltd, 3 Old Bond Street, London in 1990
