'Britannia' was commissioned by the Prince of Wales in 1892 and launched the following year. This seascape of Britannia at sundown, in full sail passing the Needles rocks and lighthouse, may date from c. 1893-5, when de Martino often accompanied the Prince during the racing season in August. However, by 1895 the Prince of Wales had all but retired from yacht racing as a result of increasing competition with his nephew, Emperor William II.
