Count Philip is seen here wearing the uniform of Major-General of the Belgian Regiment of the Guides with the ribbon and star of the Order of Leopold. He was the younger son of Leopold I, King of the Belgians. Unlike his elder brother Leopold II he was described by a contemporary as straightforward, honest, courageous and intelligent. He often stayed with Queen Victoria, who was very fond of him. His son Albert succeeded Leopold II to the throne in 1909.
Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria, January 1858; recorded in the 1855 Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
