The Dockyard at Woolwich c. 1775-80
Oil on canvas | 101.8 x 148.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401526
-
This is one of five views of royal dockyards (RCIN 401526, 401543, 405164, 405165 and 405166) executed by Paton with figures by John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-1779). Contemporary references to others in the set suggest that they were painted 1770-5. This shows the view across the Thames to the dockyards at Woolwich, where a line of ships are being constructed, with the nearest flying the Royal Standard. The Royal barge with groups of other boats and moored ships appear in the fore and middle ground.
Provenance
Presumably painted for George III; first recorded at Hampton Court in 1842; in the Queen's Presence Chamber at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 1066)
