Springfield, a powerful and beautiful bay horse was bred in 1873 by the Queen at Hampton Court Stud. He was bought by Mr J. H. Houldsworth as a gelding and trained at Newmarket by James Ryan. He won 17 of the 19 races in which he ran. He retired to stud at a fee of 100 guineas, and died in 1898. James Ryan was originally a steeplechase jockey, but turned to training when he became too heavy. In 1871 he moved from Scotland to train for Houldsworth at Newmarket and was described as genial and popular. He was also a keen golfer and Master of the Newmarket Drag Hunt.
