One of a pair of copies painted by William Corden for Queen Victoria in 1847 after Lawrence full-lengths (this one after RCIN 405138; its pair after RCIN 405142). They were used to decorate a ‘Bourbon Room’ in Buckingham Palace with a series of portraits of Bourbon monarchs for a visit of the King and Queen of the Belgians. Charles X stands in a dark blue uniform laced with silver against a red background, carrying his plumed hat; he wears the stars of the Orders of the Garter, the St Esprit, the Golden Fleece and the ribbon of the St Esprit.
