William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1743-1805) c. 1800-05
Oil on canvas | 76.8 x 63.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 400976
-
This portrait, probably painted soon before the sitter’s death, shows the Duke in the uniform of the 1st Foot Guards with the star of the Garter.
The sitter was George III’s brother, whose son, William Frederick (1776-1834), married George III’s daughter, Mary. This may be the reason why this and other Gloucester portraits (see RCIN 406663 and 400205) came into the Royal Collection.Provenance
Bequeathed to Queen Victoria by Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester in 1844; recorded hanging in the Visitors' Bedroom Lancaster Tower (Room no 244) at Windsor Castle in 1878
