34.0 x 48.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 400886
-
This view forms one of a set of 10 copies after Canaletto acquired by George IV.
This painting is a copy after Canaletto’s View of the Canale di Santa Chiara: looking North-West from the Fondamenta della Croce to the Lagoon (coll. Mario Crespi, Milan). Several other versions of the painting exist. The view includes the convent of the Corpus Domini, the church and convent of Santa Chiara, and in the distance, the lagoon and mainland beyond. On the left-hand side a gondola has dropped a person off near the residence of the British Secretary-Resident in Venice. A label on the back of the Crespi painting identifies the person as Colonel Burgess, English Secretary-Resident in Venice.
An engraving after the original by Henry Fletcher was published by Baudin on 26 June 1739.
Provenance
One of a set of ten copies acquired by George IV; all ten recorded in Store at Carlton House in 1819 (no 261) as 'after Canaletto'
