Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the architectural historian, described Ravensworth Castle, near Gateshead, County Durham, as ‘the most splendid and the most picturesque monument of the romantic medieval revival in the county’. It had been built by John Nash for the Liddell family, who had made their fortune in the coal trade. Begun in 1808 and enlarged about 1822, work was still going on in the 1840s. The castle has now been demolished. Signed: MSR.
