This is probably the view, looking across the Golfe de la Napoule towards the Esterel Massif in France, from Villa Edelweiss where Queen Victoria stayed for a few days at the beginning of April 1887. She visited the nearby Villa Nevada where her youngest son, Leopold, Duke of Albany, had died in 1884 and arranged to have pictures of the Villas (RCIN 400624) and the view painted while she was there. She wrote in her Journal of the ‘beautiful view of the Esterel range, & the Fort & town of Cannes’ which she could see from her windows at the Villa Edelweiss. ‘The view from my window of the blue sky & sea, & the beautiful line of the Esterel mountains, was quite exquisite’. Signed: E. TANNER.
