This is a much reduced copy of the Madonna del divino amore of 1516 (Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples). It is as sensitive and accurate as its scale allows, and is probably of the late sixteenth century.
The Virgin and Saint Anne are shown at full-length, seated on the ground. The infant Christ is naked on his mother's lap, reaching out to Saint John who is kneeling in profile to the right. Behind them are the square columns of a loggia, and Saint Joseph standing to the left.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in the King's Dressing Room at Windsor Castle (RCIN 922105).Provenance
First recorded in the Closet at Buckingham Palace in 1774 (see RCIN 926315) and 1790; possibly the 'Holy Family in the style of Raphael' cleaned by Anderson for Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1749 (DCO xvii, p. 548)
