Apparently a copy from the original portrait in the Prado, Madrid. The sitter was a soldier in the Spanish service in the Low Countries who served with Spinola at the Siege of Breda and succeeded him in 1629 to take command of the Spanish forces in the Netherlands. He later defected to the Prince of Orange.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales, probably before 1810; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 298) and 1819 (no 282); in the 'Van Dyck' Room at Windsor Castle by 1858, where it appears as an overdoor in Joseph Nash's watercolour of 1846 (RCIN 919787)
