Princess Beatrice is shown standing on a terrace in profile to the left in a pale blue evening dress with a long white shawl, her hands clasped before her; she wears the Order of Victoria and Albert; in the background is a winding river. The artist worked in part from a photograph taken on 24 March 1875. Queen Victoria wrote praising the portrait in her Journal as 'beautifully painted' and a good likeness; the artist was paid £300.
