-
A gold goblet in the form of a thistle head with a flared bowl; the lower portion with knop enamelled in green and purple, on a chiselled fluted stem with a plain circular spreading foot. Gerald Benney was one of the most prominent goldsmiths and designers of the post-war period in Britain. His works are notable for their strong geometric forms and innovative use of texture. With this goblet Benney contrasts the highly finished gold surface of the bowl with the matted surface of the stem and the delicate shades of enamel, an effect designed to imitate a thistle.
